Edwin Van der Sar stays at Manchester United

Edwin van der Sar is expected to sign a new one-year contact with Manchester United worth around £5million. Sir Alex Ferguson's scouts will delay by at least 12 months any need for the club to find a successor for the 39-year-old goalkeeper after they have been busily assessing suitable goalkeepers over the past year.

The Dutch veteran has played just 13 times this season following hand and knee injuries, and time off to look after his ill wife. The improved circumstances of Van der Sar's wife, Annemarie van Kesteren, who collapsed with a suspected stroke over Christmas, means the Dutch goalkeeper will now be able to commit to another year.

Schalke's Manuel Neuer has so far been the pick of the crop but his club prices him at £15m, which would be too big a chunk of United's reduced transfer budget.

It is likely to be Van der Sar's last playing contract with United.

Ben Foster will be sold in the summer, with Sunderland the probable buyers, while Tomasz Kuszczak is likely to remain the reserve keeper.

Reports suggest that van der Sar will earn £90,000 a week in the course of his new 12 month contract, starting June 2010. Tomasz Kuszczak and Ben Foster have played 13 and 12 games respectively this season.
